Economy & Merchants Guide

Vale Sangora runs on Denarii, and most of it comes from selling what you're already carrying. Here's the fastest way to build up a stockpile, how the Silver trade works, and why Infamy matters at the counter as much as it does in a fight.

This guide reflects what's known shortly after launch (September 3, 2026), cross-checked across multiple independent community sources. Merchant behavior and prices may be adjusted by balance patches.

Denarii: the basics

Denarii (singular Denarius) is Vale Sangora's currency. You get access to traders as early as right after the Prologue, and — like most exploration in this game — browsing and selling to them doesn't cost story time as long as you're not triggering main-story content in the process. See our beginner tips for why that distinction matters.

Making money early

The Silver trade — and its one trap

Silver is contraband, so it isn't sold to just anyone. Only one trader, located in Svartrau, buys it — and even they won't deal with you until your Infamy reaches Notorious (Infamy Level 4 or higher).

Reach Notorious Infamy Level 4+ Svartrau Silver Trader the only buyer Kill them, and... no one else buys Silver, ever

The Svartrau Silver trader can be killed — and if they are, that's it for this playthrough

That trader can be killed through your own actions in the world. If that happens, no one else will trade Silver for the rest of that playthrough — any Silver you're holding or find afterward becomes effectively worthless. If you're going for the Smuggler trophy (1000 Denarii from Silver sales — see our trophies guide), treat that NPC as someone worth protecting.

How Infamy affects merchants

EffectDetail
Higher pricesA high Infamy level can raise what merchants charge you across the board
Refused serviceSome merchants won't deal with a known "monster" at all once your Infamy climbs
Gated accessA few merchants — the Silver trader included — require high Infamy just to unlock trading with them in the first place
Quest-locked merchantsSome traders only open up after specific quests are completed

Infamy cuts both ways here: it opens the Silver trade while simultaneously making your day-to-day shopping more expensive elsewhere. Worth factoring in before you deliberately push your Infamy up for other reasons.

Merchant hours

Most merchants keep daytime hours and close up at night, in step with Coen's own day/night split — see our day/night cycle guide. Plan shopping trips for daylight rather than assuming a stall will be open whenever you swing by after dark.

Practical takeaway: sell off excess loot early and often, and once you're Notorious, make a dedicated Silver-selling trip to Svartrau — but never target that trader in combat or let them get caught in the crossfire, since losing them locks the entire Silver economy for the rest of your save.

Frequently asked questions

What's the currency?
Denarii — earned mainly by selling unwanted loot and, later, Silver.

Can I sell Silver anywhere?
No — only one trader in Svartrau buys it, and only once you're Notorious (Infamy Level 4+). They can be killed, permanently ending the Silver trade for that playthrough if they are.

Does Infamy affect merchants?
Yes — it can raise prices or get you refused service at some merchants, while unlocking others (like the Silver trader) that require high Infamy to access at all.
