Healing Guide: Day Items vs Night Blood

Coen heals like two different characters depending on the time of day, and the two kits don't overlap at all. Here's what actually keeps you alive during daylight, what takes over after dark, and how vampiric health segments work under the hood.

This guide reflects what's known shortly after launch (September 3, 2026), cross-checked across multiple independent community sources and against our own skill trees and Corruption research. Exact percentages may shift with balance patches.

Two healing kits, no overlap

PhaseWhat heals youWhat you lose
DayOintments, Salves, Balms; healing-boosting Witchcraft and armorVoracious Bite, blood vials, all Vampirism healing perks
NightVoracious Bite, Vials of Blood, Vampirism healing perksEvery daytime consumable and healing-boosting Witchcraft/armor

This is the same day/night split covered in our day/night cycle guide — it's not just abilities that swap, your entire survival toolkit does too.

Daytime: crafted consumables

As a human, Coen heals with Ointments, Salves, and Balms crafted from materials looted around Vale Sangora — quality of ingredients determines how much health you get back, so it's worth upgrading your recipes rather than stockpiling weak ones. Witchcraft perks like Font of Life (passive regen) and Herbal Remedies I & II (longer buff durations, instant healing) stack on top of consumables — see our skill trees guide for the full Witchcraft breakdown. Certain armor pieces also boost how much your daytime healing restores.

Nighttime: blood is the resource

Once the sun sets, none of your daytime items work. Instead:

How vampiric health segments actually work

Vampire health isn't one continuous bar — it's split into segments, and losing health within your current segment behaves differently from losing an entire segment outright. Right after taking a hit, part of what you just lost shows up as grey health: still gone, but recoverable for a short window if you land hits quickly.

Current health Grey health — recoverable Fully lost Blood Theft: attack now to reclaim it

Grey health is a short recovery window, not a permanent loss — yet

The Blood Theft perk is what turns that grey health back into real health when you land an attack quickly enough — functionally a "keep being aggressive and you get punished less" rally mechanic. Wait too long, or take another hit first, and that grey sliver locks in as permanently lost until you heal it through Voracious Bite or a blood vial instead. Scarlet Shield (the perk you can unlock by draining Ambrus — see our boss guides) restores a chunk of your segment automatically on a Perfect Block, tying this system directly into the combat loop as well.

Practical takeaway: during the day, invest in ingredient quality over item quantity for your Ointments/Salves/Balms. At night, stay aggressive after taking a hit rather than backing off — with Blood Theft, pressing the attack is what actually saves your health, not retreating.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use day items at night, or vice versa?
No — the two kits are completely separate; night removes every daytime consumable and healing bonus and replaces them with Voracious Bite and blood vials.

Does Voracious Bite work on every enemy?
No — it fails against large creatures like bears and against spectral enemies with no blood to drink.

What is grey health?
Recently lost vampiric health that's still recoverable for a short window — land a hit with Blood Theft active to reclaim it before it locks in as fully lost.
